Instruments: Guitar
Style: Classical, Electric
Education: B.M. from University of Akron

Derek has been avidly playing guitar for 23 years. He started off down the rock path, which led to expanding interests in other genres. He attended the Atlanta Institute of Music. In Ohio, he majored in Jazz Studies at the University of Akron- along the way, learning classical and fingerstyle.

Teaching professionally for 17 years, he was a full-time instructor one-on-one at Falls Music Center, along with Lentine’s Music. Afterward, he opened Falls Music Academy in Cuyahoga Falls as the owner, where private lessons were taught- as well as small group and rock ensemble bands.

He spent 10 years in Asia teaching and performing guitar in a mix of styles like rock, blues, pop along with local ethnic bands. The exposure to a vast multitude of ethnic styles and sounds greatly broadened the musical palette, and well as offering new approaches to composing and arranging songs- with hints of Indian to Far Eastern sounds.

Teaching and performing are a passion of Derek’s- from beginner through to advanced for the aspiring child to adult. Theory is taught along the way- with skills to arrange, compose and learn one’s own voice- along with emulating our favorite artists.

Derek loves spending time playing out around Columbus and Cleveland, from blues and rock cover gigs to currently arranging, composing and recording original material.
